Brickyard Riesling

Brickyard is VQA Niagara Riesling, and was created to offer the consumer the best possible value while maintaining the unique and exceptional character of Riesling grapes grown in Niagara.

Brickyard is fun and fruity. Invitingly pungent on the nose, the green apple and grapefruit aromas jump out of the glass. There are also notes of ripe lemon and fresh citrus zest. On the palate, the wine is dry and crisp. The bright acidity gives the wine a wonderful freshness, and accentuates the green apple, grapefruit and lemon fruitiness. Brickyard shows off its’ heritage as the characteristic Niagara mineral flavors, derived from the clay and limestone in the soils, surface during the wonderful, lingering finish. Enjoy Brickyard Riesling on its’ own, chilled as a refreshing and enjoyable sipping wine. You’ll be happy to have Brickyard on your lunch and dinner table, enjoying it with salads, white fish, and chicken.

The Brickyard Story

The Brickyard Story

‘Brickyard’ is all about contradiction. Winemakers Paul Pender and Rene Van Ede are making the most of this contradiction.

While Niagara has a history of agriculture, there are many locations which are not friendly for the farmer. Although the location and soil might be very favorable, the excessive amount of rocks and stones make working the land extremely difficult. Implements were frequently damaged and broken, and the term ‘brickyard’ was coined to describe these harsh farming challenges. This is especially true for growing grapes, as the vineyard requires additional work to create the supporting structure for the vines. Postholes for example, can be almost impossible to create in the unyielding soils.

The decision to plant vines on such sites could easily be questioned. The contradiction arises since, once planted, the vines thrive. The rocks work to retain heat. The rich, well-drained soils optimize the conditions for the development of flavorful fruit. Yields can be high, while still demonstrating the wonderful and unique character of Niagara Riesling.

Winemakers Paul Pender and Rene Van Ede decided to take advantage of these exceptional vineyard sources. Capitalizing on the availability of the fruit, they saw this as an opportunity to put their outstanding winemaking skills to work in order to offer the consumer exceptional VQA Riesling. By utilizing technology and modern methodologies, they created wine which represents outstanding value. Vibrant, juicy citrus notes and stony minerality, the hallmarks of renowned Niagara Riesling, are retained in the wine. Yet the price point is significantly less than consumers expect to pay for high quality Niagara wines. Technology and technique are the foundation of the winemaking. The wine is actually made at the new ‘Redstone’ production facility, allowing for the efficiencies of the new production system to be realized.

They drew on the history of the area to create the brand name. As a result, the wine represents outstanding value for the consumer. Brickyard is the culmination of years of vineyard and winemaking experience, great fruit, and efficient production methods, moving it to the forefront of high quality, affordable consumer choices.

Brickyard: a great value Riesling with a uniquely Niagara character!

“Brickyard is Moray Tawse’s new winery venture, just down the street from his namesake winery. There is a pale straw colour anda bouquet of mineral, lime, bergamot, peach, candied orange peel and white flowers. The palate is slim with lots of mineral, peach, lime and honey lingering on the finish. I should also mention that there is 18g/l of residual sugar, but because of the elevated acidity, the presence is that of a dry wine.”

“Brickyard is a new label from Moray Tawse, a Toronto financial-services executive whose Tawse Winery in Vineland, Ont., recently garnered Winery of the Year honours for the third consecutive year from Wine Access magazine’s Canadian Wine Awards. What a well-priced beauty this is, off-dry but perfectly tuned with fresh, balancing acidity. It hails fron Niagara’s superb 2012 growing Season and shows uncanny peach and green apple flavours on a light frame. It would pair well with light curries, smoked fish, sushi or a cheese course.” Reviewed September 2013.”

“This off-dry Riesling has a nose of bright peach, grapefruit, lemon and honeysuckle. It has a sweet edge to it with ripe fruit and citrus that is somewhat balanced by refreshing acidity.”

“A well made zesty lively riesling with just enough fruit sweetness to cover up the mouthwatering acidity. Expect aromas of green apple, lemon and pear fruit with some floral and mineral complexity. Very good length. A very versatile food wine with cheese, white meat and seafood dishes. Tasted July 2013.”

“This is the debut of Brickyard, a brand in the portfolio of Moray Tawse, named for a clay vineyard once used as a source of brick production. More to the point, this light-weight (10% alcohol) off-dry riesling captures refreshing juiciness and subtle, fairly complex aromas of green apple/pear, lime and a touch of petrol. Even in the ripe 2012 vintage it maintains the mineral zest that is a hallmark of Niagara rieslings. Just a bit coarse on the finish; with very good length. Good value. Tasted June 2013.”
